As well as having what is possibly the world’s coolest name, Ziv is also the Category Manager for transport here at Fat Llama.
Ziv was born in sunny Tel Aviv but grew up in Zürich ‘alongside a bunch of cows,’ and came to the UK to study because his German ‘wasn’t great’ (although we suspect he’s just being modest here).
How did you hear about Fat Llama?
I came across it randomly when I was midway through my second Masters and looking to rent a camera for a holiday. It just looked incredibly exciting — the concept was great, there was a very strong growth curve and it was backed by some of the best investors in the world. You don’t get a lot of startups where all of these components fall into place; it seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I quit my Masters and came here!
What do you do here?
I’m the category manager for transportation, so it’s my job to grow supply and demand for transport on the platform.
When I started, there were just a few bikes on the site — so I started building up campervans and motorhomes, ramping up supply and creating this massive RV market.
But beyond that, what I’m really trying to do is give people the freedom to get wherever they want to go, easily and cheaply.
How do you do it?
The main thing is looking around and gauging levels of supply and demand — from what’s already on the platform to trends in the market outside of Fat Llama. It’s just about being hyper-aware of what’s going on.
What have you learnt working here?
One thing I love about the company is how data-driven we are – every decision we make is backed by real numbers. We don’t just go off hunch and intuition. So learning to work with data and making decisions from data has been a huge thing for me.
What’s challenging about it?
Everything — it’s a challenging role. When you’re trying to build one of the biggest companies in the world, it’s not going to be easy. You’re building something that no-one’s built before. No-one’s built a peer-to-peer rental marketplace, at scale, profitably, for every different category. The hardest thing is figuring out how to tackle it — but that’s what makes it so exciting.
What are you passionate about outside of work?
This is going to sound like such a cliché, but I really enjoy travelling, And I really love food, and cooking.
That is… a really boring answer.
I know it is — sorry!
