Why I Use: Save The Student

We spoke to our friends at Save The Student, a website committed to giving students the lowdown on money matters of all shapes and sizes.

What is Save the Student?

Save the Student is the UK’s largest student money site – it’s all about making, saving and managing cash at university and beyond. We’re talking: ways to make money, find a job, nail student finance, boost your savings and pay less for just about everything.

Sounds good! What’s the catch?

There isn’t one. Save the Student is independent, impartial and always free to use.
Too many students get to university and are immediately landed with debt, stress and financial hardship, but with very little help to make sense of it all. Save the Student aims to change that!

There’s a lot of misinformation around student finances. Save the Student takes an informed look at the bigger picture.

So what’s the #1 way to be better off?

The path to riches isn’t a ring road: there’s more than one way! In fact, to really be better off, you’ll need to pack a few things for the journey – but even making a budget is a brilliant way to start. Everything else you’ll need is on the site, from deals and discounts to the common sense advice you need to bring it all together.

Where did the idea for Save the Student come from?

Save the Student was started in 2007 by Owen Burek, then a first-year student at Manchester University. After speaking to flatmates, he started thinking up ways for students to make or save money locally, but it didn’t take long to realise they were relevant to students all over the UK … and a site was born!
After graduating, Owen moved Save the Student from his bedroom to a business incubator run by Manchester Metropolitan University. Today the growing team are anchored in East London, making digital waves from a 60-foot yacht.

Do students really have it tough?

Lots of students struggle to get by on very little cash, while others can be fairly flush. Either way, there’s a lot of misinformation (and stereotyping) out there. Save the Student takes an informed look at the bigger picture.

I’m not a student – what’s in it for me?

It doesn’t really matter how much money you have; if you’re not making the most of it, you’re missing out. Whether you want to be smarter with your cash, save money at uni or make sense of banking, investing or financial jargon, Save the Student can help you figure it out.
