Why I Use: Sugru

Here at Fat Lama, we tend to get excited about new ways to extend the life cycle of our things. That’s why we had a chat with the guys from Sugru to find out about their amazing new product. Stick around and find out more…

1. What Is Sugru? And Where Does The Name Come From?

Sugru is the world’s first mouldable glue that sticks to almost anything and turns into a strong flexible rubber overnight. Invented for people looking to repair and improve stuff, it’s used by people in over 170 countries. Its name comes from the Irish word for ‘play’.

2. What Can Sugru Be Used On?

It’s made to stick to as many materials as possible forming a strong bond to aluminium, steel, ceramics, glass, wood and other materials including some plastics and rubbers. It’s a strong adhesive but it also fills gaps like a putty so it’s really useful to have in the house. It’s water and heat proof as well. One of our most popular fixes is using it to either fix or reinforce fraying cables.

3. What’s Your Favourite Most Inventive Use Of Sugru?

There are too many to mention but often the most inventive are the simple and thoughtful fixes people do for each other. Like the boys who added bumpers to their granddad’s phone so he could pick it up easier, the woman who added Sugru blobs to microwave buttons for her visually impaired husband and the dad who built up the brakes on his daughter’s new bike because she couldn’t quite reach them. Sugru is everyday problem solving and that’s where people get most inventive.

4. Why Is Upcycling Important To You?

The reason Sugru was invented was to get people fixing and making things again. Upcycling is probably a less intimidating version of ‘making’ and may well appeal to a broader audience which is great. It may also encourage people to buy better quality products – products that last and are worth upcycling.
